5 Varieties of Worship Leader Boot Camps Launching in 2018

January 2, 2018

Our primary training for worship leaders is through one of the Worship Leader Boot Camp experiences. We now offer a variety of possibilities depending upon how deep you want to go and how much time you can allot the learning experience.

The Worship Leader Boot Camp begins with a thorough look at critical issues that impact churches and worship leaders. Churches throughout the world are struggling with what style of worship is appropriate for their setting. Many churches find themselves dying, stuck to old forms of worship that once were very meaningful, yet now don’t seem to engage the people in meaningful worship nor speak a language that the unchurched can understand. In the 50’s and 60’s, worship was pretty similar among churches of the same denomination and most sang from a common source—the denominational hymnal. Today, things have changed drastically and church leaders are struggling to determine what their church’s corporate worship should look like. There are many factors to consider in this quest. This event will help leaders dive into some very important issues impacting corporate worship:

  1. What is the biblical basis of worship?
  2. What does it mean to worship God with all our being?
  3. What role should personal preferences play in worship?
  4. How should culture impact corporate worship?
  5. How should a missionary mindset impact corporate worship?
  6. How is worship and discipleship intertwined?
  7. Is unified worship the best way to go?
  8. What style of worship is appropriate for my church?
  9. If a church does sense God’s leadership to change, how can that be done in a healthy, God-honoring, people-loving manner with biblical and musical excellence?

In addition the Worship Leader Boot Camp adds intensive training for the worship leadership of a church in these areas:

  1. Leadership issues to help each person grow in their leadership and understand how to be sensitive in their work.
  2. How to select (and where to find) new songs for worship, putting them through the proper filters for text and music.
  3. Mechanics of worship-learning how to put together a set list, looking at key relationships and textual relationships as well as flow in worship and planning a worship service. Participants will learn how to publish a worship plan/guide for the musicians that will aid in implementing the worship service.
  4. Corporate worship in practice, looking at common pitfalls, rehearsal basics, and how to have ongoing evaluation to improve your worship team’s leadership.

All Worship Leader Boot Camps include the 114-page Worship Leader Handbook.

The following five varieties of Worship Leader Boot Camp will be offered in 2018:

Worship Leader Boot Camp BASIC

Worship Leader Boot Camp EXTREME

As our Worship Leader Boot Camp covers a great amount of material, many have expressed a desire to go deeper in making direct application to their lives and ministries. Worship Leader Boot Camp EXTREME begins with the Worship Leader Boot Camp material, combines strong elements of a new training, A Week in the Life of a Worship Leader, and then focuses on practically working through the concepts. This is a retreat context beginning Thursday noon and running through mid-afternoon on Saturday. This year’s retreat will be held at Caraway Conference Center.

Dates: March 1-3, June 7-9, August 16-18 (Hurry, March 1-3 is filling fast!)

Cost: including 2 nights single-occupancy room and 7 meals, is $235.

*Due to the limited number of people that can participate, we must limit registrants to one or two per church. Pastors are encouraged to come with their church’s worship leader.

Worship Leader Boot Camp ONLINE

A self-paced, fully online version of the Worship Leader Boot Camp is now live. This course includes 29 videos with 6.5 hours of instruction recorded at a recent Boot Camp. One should expect to spend a minimum of 10 hours with this class. While this lacks the excitement and inspiration of gathering with people in a live event, it does cover the material thoroughly on your timetable. You can take time to digest the material in a slower fashion than the live event. There is no contact with the instructor in this course.

Dates: Anytime

Cost: $30 (discounts available to our NC Baptist churches)

Worship Leader Boot Camp BEYOND EXTREME

This takes all the material described above for the Worship Leader Boot Camp EXTREME and expands it to a 12-week online class with weekly video class meetings. A small group selected to participate in these classes will work through online video teaching, resources, projects, forums, etc. to learn the material thoroughly. The group will meet each week with the instructor in a video conference to discuss the material. Additionally, there is much interaction online with the instructor and classmates. Two weeks are devoted to completing a final project for the class. Participants must be committed to the entire 12 weeks. This class is limited to NC Baptists unless openings are available a week before the class begins. More details coming soon!

Dates: TBD

Cost: $139

If you are from a NC Baptist church and are interested in this class, please fill out this form and you will be contacted. If you are not from a NC Baptist church and are interested in this class, fill out this form.

9 reasons people aren’t singing in worship

Worship leaders around the world are changing their church’s worship (often unintentionally) into a spectator event, and people are not singing anymore. Here are nine reasons why congregations aren’t singing anymore — and what we can do to change that: The congregations don’t know...

Why we must be open to different styles of worship music

This past weekend, I had the privilege of worshipping at a gathering of many churches from one area (in my denomination, an “associational” meeting). During that meeting, several worship teams—all using different styles, and some in a different language—led us in worship. Since...

Why we need to sing in worship even when we don’t know—or like—the song

I’ve been there, and you likely have, also. You’ve never heard the song your church is singing. Or, you’ve heard it but don’t like it. The temptation is to silently mimic the words or not to sing at all. Here’s why we need to sing anyway: It’s right to sing God’s praises. Even if...

Worship and disciple-making

This podcast was recorded at the Disciple-making conference breakout session training and focuses on worship. Corporate worship is not a passive entertainment, but a formative event in the process of making disciples. And worship leaders must take care what they imprint into the...

10 signs you’re a worship-leading pharisee

Scripture classifies the Pharisees as the strictest of all the Jewish religious sects. Literally set apart from others, they clung to their laws and traditions even at the expense of God’s law. Jesus rebuked them numerous times for their hypocrisy, pretension and...

To stream or not to stream

It’s easier to live stream than ever before and will only get easier, as evidenced by more and more churches streaming their services. To quote my friend and legendary songwriter/producer Greg Nelson, “Not everything that can be done, should be done.” So, if the question is no...
