“Come and See” is the theme for the 2020 Literacy Missions Conferences, which provide volunteers with quality training and instruction to point people to Christ by teaching reading, writing and language skills to others.
“Come and See” how to improve lesson plans, assist with citizenship, help with technology, incorporate new ideas, utilize games and more. Topics will also focus on teaching internationals who have Buddhist or Islamic backgrounds and more. “Come and See” how to start an English as a second language (ESL) ministry. “Come and See” how to start an adult reading and writing ministry. “Come and See” how to start a tutoring children and youth ministry.
Following is a brief list of some of the update sessions: technology in the classroom; Bible storytelling; worldview and culture; language for English language learners; curriculum roundup; basic English using the Bible; supplemental activities for English learners; tips for advertising your literacy ministry; vendors from Oxford Press and much more.
- Adult Reading and Writing Basic Workshop
Come and see how you can get started teaching an English-speaking adult how to read and write. We will be using the Laubach Way to Reading materials. Topics include an organizational plan, mission purpose, using the Bible to teach, and lesson plans to get you started. Drills include teaching the alphabet, words and sentences using the Laubach method. Cost of manual/materials is $20.
- English as a Second Language Basic Workshop
Come and see how to teach English to adults who speak another language. This workshop will cover: the mission and purpose of ESL; how to organize the ministry in and through your church; lesson planning; advertising for students; sharing your faith; drills on how to teach second language students from beginner to intermediate levels; and more. Cost of manual/materials is $20.
- Tutoring Children and Youth Basic Workshop
Come and see how to teach children and youth in and through church ministries and how to work with local schools. This workshop will address: tutoring as missions; an organizational plan; understanding students; and planning tutoring sessions in reading, writing and math. Supplemental activities and sharing your faith will also be covered. Cost of manual/materials is $20.
$30 includes lunch.
Additional cost of $20 for manuals/materials for participants who register for workshop tracks.
