Nov. 1

“Praying on the Mountain” is a call to prayer that began in the heart of one man and has become a movement with a goal of having 1 million believers praying for spiritual awakening by Nov. 1.

Background
“Praying on the Mountain” began in the heart of the Rev. Fred Lunsford, a 95-year-old retired pastor, director of missions and World War II hero. What began as a call by Lunsford for 100 pastors to gather and pray on top of a mountain in western North Carolina on May 5 of this year has become a movement for 1 million believers to unite and ask God for spiritual awakening in America and beyond.

Although COVID-19 prevented the in-person prayer gathering, God gave Lunsford and other leaders a new vision to ask 100,000 believers to pray from their homes. As God moved, more than 265,000 believers pledged to pray. On May 5, Lunsford and a few local leaders prayed for revival from the mountain as thousands of others prayed from other locations.

National Attention

A local radio station broadcast the prayer gathering with Lunsford from the mountain on May 5. Later that day, Ronnie Floyd, president and CEO of the executive committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, hosted a live online prayer gathering with Lunsford and other key leaders behind the movement, which has continued to grow.

Documentary and Video Invitation

Pastor Greg Mathis and the staff of Mud Creek Baptist Church in Hendersonville produced a 28-minute documentary on Lunsford and the “Praying on the Mountain” call to prayer, as well as a video from Lunsford inviting others to join him in calling 1 million people to pray by Nov. 1. Both videos are also included at the bottom of this page.

Prayer Emphasis and Resources
Each year, thousands of North Carolina Baptists pray for spiritual awakening during a 30-day prayer emphasis in October. Visit prayfor30days.org to download a free 30-day devotional prayer guide and information on how to register to receive prayer prompts by email or text message. A new devotional prayer guide will be available this fall, which may be used to prepare your heart ahead of the “Praying on the Mountain” call to prayer and the Baptist state convention annual meeting. Additional prayer resources are included as downloads below.
