LARRY PHILLIPSMinistry Strategist, Baptists on Mission
Larry Phillips serves as an immigrant ministries strategist for the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. He is an accredited immigration representative with the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Access Programs to practice immigrant law before the Department of Homeland Security. His previous convention ministries include: Hispanic consultant with Discipleship and Evangelism Group, director of Hollifield Leadership Center and strategy coordinator for the Unifour.
Prior to joining the convention staff, Larry served as regional coach for Western South America while under appointment with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. He coached missionary and national church planting teams in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile and Argentina. He was also team coach for the Western South America Regional Leadership Team located in Quito, Ecuador. Larry served with the International Mission Board for 19 years.
Larry grew up in a small mill village town in upstate South Carolina, where he felt God’s call upon his life while in high school. Larry graduated from Furman University. He received his master of theology and doctor of ministry degrees from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.
His pastoral ministries have included: pastor, Mountain View Baptist Church, Lexington, North Carolina; associate pastor, First Baptist Church, Hickory, North Carolina.; and pastor, First Baptist Church, Lima, Peru.
Larry has a passion to see people move beyond self-imposed limits on their personhood and potential. He believes in one’s ability to move forward and become all one is meant to be in Christ. He embraces diversity, encourages differences, shares decision-making and pursues a personal identity conformed to the servant image of Christ.
He is married to his high school sweetheart, Kathy. They have two children and five grandchildren.
