As a movement of churches on mission together, the work of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina is organized into five groups, each headed by a director of that ministry area. The five groups that make up the convention’s structure aim to connect churches and associations to relationships and resources that fuel missions partnerships across the state and around the world.
Kathryn Carson is director of the Marketing and Communications group. She provides strategic direction for communications initiatives involving print and digital communications, web design, social media, editorial content, graphic design and videography.
We asked the five directors to tell us about their work and a bit about themselves. Here’s what Kathryn shared.
Describe your role with North Carolina Baptists.
The Marketing and Communications group partners with convention staff to communicate the work of the ministry using inspiring stories and resources that assist churches to fulfill the Great Commission. I have the privilege of leading this talented group of professionals who are passionate about being on mission together by using their gifts to serve the Lord.
Tell us about your group’s mission.
Our mission is to share stories of what God is doing and develop resources and communication that will assist N.C. Baptist churches to impact the world for Christ. We do this by partnering with the ministries of the BSCNC.
What about your group are you most excited about for 2022?
God is working in our state and among our convention staff to unite His people. I believe that He is breaking down barriers and silos and bringing people together for what really matters –– sharing the hope found only in Jesus Christ. I’m excited to see what God is going to do in and among His people to continue to bring us together around the mission.
What are you currently reading? Tell us a little bit about it.
As I write this, we are a few weeks away from Christmas and I’m reading “The Dawning of Indestructible Joy” by John Piper. It’s a daily devotion for Advent, and I can’t get past the introduction: John 1:14-16, “… the Word became flesh … From His fullness we have all received grace upon grace.” I don’t know about you, but the past few years have left me a little less than «full» and I need the fullness of God every moment. I’m excited to slow down a little this time of year and focus on His life-giving grace upon grace.
What book (other than the Bible) has helped shape you most or left the biggest impact on you? How so?
Throughout my adulthood I have battled seasons of what Churchill called “the black dog” and years ago I read the book “When I Don’t Desire God: How to Fight for Joy” by John Piper. There are times I find myself going back to reference that book when the black dog rears its ugly head.
If you could share a meal with any three people who have ever lived, who would they be and why?
I think you can tell that I’m a Piper fan, so I would definitely welcome a meal with him. I would also love to talk to Jael from Judges. She is one of those heroines in the Bible who had to do the really hard work to bring about the victory. She was awesome! Lastly, maybe my great-grandmother who I called Granny. She was a simple, country woman, but she loved the Lord and her family fiercely.
If you could spend two weeks anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?
I would go back to Montego Bay Jamaica with my husband. My husband and I went there to celebrate 20 years of marriage, and it was the best vacation ever. The water and snorkeling were simply amazing.
Share three fun facts about your family.
- My immediate family is very close and we all still live within 10 minutes of each other. I live on a family farm next to my parents.
- My family and friends call me Katie.
- My two brothers and I are all serving the Lord in church ministry in various capacities. My older brother is an elder, youth leader and worship leader at my church, Macedonia Baptist Church in Harnett County. My younger brother is a worship leader at Hope Community Church in Apex.
