When Hurricane Helene devastated western North Carolina last fall, Baptists on Mission volunteers were among the first to respond. Your gifts to the North Carolina Missions Offering continue to make this work possible today and in the years of rebuilding to come.
For more than 40 years, Baptists on Mission has been at the forefront of disaster response, showing up in challenging moments to meet needs and share hope in Jesus’ name. Gifts to the North Carolina Missions Offering (NCMO) provide vital support for this work and for every other ministry of Baptists on Mission.
Hurricane Helene devastated western North Carolina last September. Rivers widened, roads disappeared, and railroad tracks were washed away. Yet in the middle of the destruction, volunteers in yellow shirts arrived, ready to serve.
Volunteers prepared 40,000 meals in a single day to feed local residents affected by the storm. In the weeks that followed, more than 13,000 volunteers from North Carolina and other states joined the response.
“We just want to try our best to take care of the needs of people, to offer them hope in the name of the Lord,” said Tom Beam, Baptists on Mission’s disaster relief coordinator.
For community members, the presence of volunteers was as meaningful as the practical help.
“This is the church,” said Elizabeth Silvers, a Spruce Pine resident. “To have all this destruction and then you see a bunch of yellow shirts and a smiling face — it is beautiful. It really warms my heart, and I know that God sends His people where they’re needed.”
Now one year after the storm, the needs remain great.
“We want to be here three, four, five years from now, helping people in Jesus’ name,” said Richard Brunson, executive director of Baptists on Mission.
By giving generously to the North Carolina Missions Offering, North Carolina Baptists make this ongoing work possible. Together, N.C. Baptists are living sent — offering relief, rebuilding communities and sharing the hope of Christ with those in need.
The NCMO helps fund the ministries of Baptists on Mission, church planting through SendNC and missions efforts through local associations. This year’s theme is “Living Sent,” based on John 20:21: “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, I also send you.” The theme highlights seeing a need, responding to it and offering hope in Jesus’ name.
The 2025 NCMO goal is $2.6 million. Whether you give as an individual or through your church, every gift makes a difference.
