As we seek to cultivate a culture of life in our churches and communities, pastors play a critical role in helping people see human worth as God defines it.

Each January, many churches take time to recognize Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. For pastors shepherding congregations across North Carolina, the call to affirm the dignity of every human life is a year-round gospel responsibility.

As we seek to cultivate a culture of life in our churches and communities, pastors play a critical role in helping people see human worth as God defines it. Preaching on the sanctity of human life requires clarity, courage and care. Here are several guiding principles to help frame your preaching, whether on Jan. 18 or throughout the year.

Remember the entire scope of the sanctity of human life

The biblical doctrine of the imago Dei — that every person is created in the image of God — grounds the sanctity of human life from beginning to end. Scripture affirms God-given dignity and worth from the womb to the tomb.

While abortion rightly remains a central concern, pastors should help their congregations see the broader landscape of life issues as well. This includes the growing cultural acceptance of euthanasia and assisted suicide, as well as questions surrounding aging, disability and end-of-life care. Teaching the full scope of the sanctity of human life forms disciples who value life consistently, not selectively.

Get the tone right

Our cultural moment calls for boldness but never harshness. Pastors must not shrink back from biblical truth, yet how we speak matters. Preaching on the sanctity of human life should be marked by pastoral love, tenderness and compassion.

Speak with conviction, but also with tears. Let your people hear what Scripture teaches and your shepherd’s heart for those who are hurting, conflicted or carrying deep regret. Truth spoken with grace reflects the heart of Christ.

Exposit the Scriptures

Root your message in the clear teaching of God’s Word. Choose a primary text and allow Scripture to shape both your theology and application. Passages such as Genesis 1:26-27, Psalm 139 and Psalm 127 provide rich biblical foundations for understanding God’s design for human life.

Faithful exposition ensures that the authority behind your message is God’s Word, not personal opinion or cultural reaction. As pastors, we are called to bring Scripture to bear on the issues of our day, trusting the Spirit to do the work only He can do.

Remember the gospel

Preaching on the sanctity of human life must always lead to the gospel. Make room for grace. Proclaim clearly that the forgiveness offered through Jesus Christ covers all sin, including abortion. Remind your people that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and that healing, restoration and new life are found at the cross.

When pastors preach the sanctity of human life with biblical clarity and Christlike compassion, churches are shaped into communities that protect the vulnerable, support families and reflect God’s heart for life.

Jan. 18 may provide a focused opportunity, but the call remains every week: to proclaim the goodness of God’s design, the dignity of every human life and the hope of the gospel that restores what sin has broken. As you lead your church, may your preaching help form a people who love life and love their neighbors with conviction and grace.
