John and Verneeta Butler’s lives completely changed when Hurricane Florence swept through North Carolina in the summer of 2018.
Living in Lumberton during the storm, the Butlers’ home fell into major disrepair after the Hurricane brought severe flooding to the town.
“It literally pushed our house over on the foundation,” Verneeta Butler said. “It wasn’t even sitting level.”
For the next five years, the Butlers lived in their home, which had developed mold, mildew and buckled floors. To the Butlers, the situation felt hopeless.
“You don’t have a clue, the trauma of losing stuff,” Verneeta said. “It takes a lot … mentally, physically and even spiritually.”
Now, five years later, the Butlers are living in a new, completely renovated home, thanks to the help of Disaster Relief volunteers with Baptists on Mission and gifts to the North Carolina Missions Offering (NCMO). Each year, the NCMO is taken up to assist the work of N.C. Baptist ministries such as Baptists on Mission, which supports disaster relief efforts across the state.
Every year, gifts to the NCMO make a direct impact in the lives of families across the state — including John and Verneeta Butler.
“We thank God for everybody that has come out, that has worked, that has (given) their time and their money,” Verneeta said. “If you want to know where your money is going, you come to Lumberton, North Carolina, and you’ll see where your money is going.”
