Sharing the love of Christ in NYC

Coats for the City offers a unique 2-day opportunity to serve alongside NYC churches through evangelism, prayer walking and coat distribution. Join with others as we partner with South Carolina Baptists and the Metropolitan New York Baptist Association in this incredible service and ministry opportunity.

Commit to collect and donate coats

We are accepting men’s, women’s and children’s coats suitable for a New York winter. Let us know that you will be donating coats by filling out the form below!

Please note: NYC winters are cold! We ask that only heavy coats be donated; we are not accepting clothing such as long-sleeve shirts, hoodies or lightweight sweaters.

All donated coats must be:

  • Suitable for a cold/harsh winter
  • Clean and in good condition
  • Free of holes, tears and stains
  • Have working zippers and all buttons attached
  • Preferred sizes: S, M, L and XL

Drop-off

Please make sure all coats are packed according to the provided instructions. Once packed, coats may be dropped off at one of these locations:

  • NC Baptist Building: Ship to or drop off at the Baptist Building throughout the year.
  • NC Baptist Annual Meeting: Final coat collection on Nov. 16-17.

Give financially

A warm winter coat for New York City costs about $40. Your financial gift helps provide coats to those in need. Every donation goes directly toward purchasing coats.

Go to New York City

Coats for the City is made possible by hundreds of volunteers from North and South Carolina, and we invite you to join! Register a team to participate in evangelism, prayer walking and coat distribution. Teams are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, with 6-8 people per team. For larger groups, please contact us about availability.

Prayer walking/Evangelism

On Friday, Dec. 4, volunteers will partner with NYC churches in evangelism and prayer walking in neighborhoods made up primarily of international communities with little or no exposure to the gospel. Virtual training will be provided ahead of time for participating teams.

Schedule

Coats for the City is a 2-day mission opportunity during the first weekend in December. This year’s dates will be Dec. 4-5, 2026. Teams may return home Saturday night, but we encourage staying to worship with your NYC church partner on Sunday.

Thursday – Teams arrive in New York City
Friday – Morning evangelism and prayer walking; evening worship service
Saturday – Coat distribution

Travel & Lodging

Teams are responsible for their own lodging and transportation. Many groups stay at MNYBA, the New York School of Urban Ministries, or book lodging through Airbnb or Vrbo. For getting around the city, we recommend using the NYC Metro.

Program fee

This year, we have introduced a $30 administrative fee per volunteer that goes to NYC. This fee helps cover administrative costs, logistics, transportation and necessary supplies.

How can I become a host church in NYC?

Register your church to host a distribution location in New York City. Once registered, we help partner you with a NC/SC team. This is a great opportunity to have extra hands and feet as you reach the people in your neighborhoods.
