Children's ministry is a powerful way churches spread the gospel and glorify God. Read to learn more from the N.C. Baptist Children's Ministry team about how churches can engage in this vital work together.

North Carolina Baptists’ mission is rooted in sharing the gospel and advancing the kingdom of God — together. One of the most strategic areas we can invest in is ministry to children. While individual churches carry out vital discipleship work every week, greater impact happens when churches partner together to meet needs, share resources and serve side by side.

Children’s ministry is not confined to the walls of a single church building. It thrives when the body of Christ collaborates, building bridges across congregations to reach families and communities for Jesus.

When we consider what it means to serve in the local church, we often think of structured roles: teaching Sunday school, organizing Vacation Bible School (VBS) or assisting in the nursery. These roles are crucial, but what if we broadened our vision?

In Matthew 19:14, Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

His invitation wasn’t limited to one group, city or congregation. As followers of Christ, we are called to reflect this inclusive heart by seeing all children and families as part of the mission field and by extending our efforts beyond our own sanctuaries. We have also been given the command to go and make disciples in all of the world.

This summer, we witnessed a compelling example of this kingdom mindset. A woman who was challenged by her local church recognized that a neighboring church had not held Vacation Bible School in more than 10 years.

She mobilized her women’s prayer group, gathered supplies and organized a full VBS experience. Through donated decorations, personal connections and a willingness to serve, this group provided a week of gospel-centered fun and truth to more than 30 children and their families. What began as one small act of obedience became a life-changing opportunity to plant seeds of harvest for the gospel for eternity.

When we recognize the broader scope of the kingdom, it reshapes how we approach ministry. Collaboration becomes more than an option. It becomes a calling. Children’s ministry offers a unique opportunity for churches to model unity, generosity and mission-mindedness in tangible ways outside of their church building, with children and families leading the way.

Here are several practical approaches churches can consider as they seek to partner together for the sake of the gospel:

1. Adopt a church for VBS or seasonal events

  • Partner with a nearby church that lacks the resources or volunteer base to host children’s outreach events.
  • Share curriculum, decorations, or even send a team to assist in planning and leading.

2. Mobilize families for community engagement

  • Equip families to serve together outside the church — at food banks, community centers, partnering with neighboring first responders or schools.
  • Encourage families to live missionally in their neighborhoods by building relationships and meeting tangible needs.

3. Share resources across congregations

  • Rotate children’s ministry supplies and curriculum with churches in your local network or association.
  • Offer training opportunities, share volunteer teams, or collaborate on combined events.

4. Invest in relationships, not just programs

  • Take time to listen to the needs of smaller or aging congregations in your area.
  • Build long-term relationships between churches that foster trust, encouragement and shared vision.
  • The needs in our communities are great, but so is the potential when we work together. Children’s and family ministry are a foundational place to model kingdom collaboration, showing the next generation what it means to live on mission together.

By intentionally stepping outside our own walls and linking arms with other churches, we not only meet immediate needs, we cultivate gospel-centered unity, sow seeds of faith, and point children and families to the transforming love of Christ.

Let’s be churches that live out the gospel, not just in word, but in action — together. We pray that you will consider joining in the kingdom work around you and partnering outside of the walls of your church to help build children’s and family ministry for the greater good of the kingdom.
