God’s name, reputation and fame captivated David.
“LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens…what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” (Psalm 8:1, 4 NIV).
When he wrote Psalm 8, David was overwhelmed by the Lord’s majesty and amazed by the splendor of His glory in the heavens. As he continued writing, he began to compare the smallness and insignificance of man to the majesty and magnificence of God. Like us, David wondered why the great God who created the universe is mindful of the little lives of men and women.
The creation story helps answer David’s question. Genesis 1 describes man as made in God’s image, fashioned in His likeness. Adam and Eve, the first people, were His delight. God loved coming to the garden and spending time with them.
Like us, David wondered why the great God who created the universe is mindful of the little lives of men and women.
Sadly, all that changed in Genesis 3 with the temptation and fall of man. God would not walk with His creation in that garden again. Man’s relationship with God was altered forever. However, the Lord did not leave humanity in this broken state of existence. He sent a Redeemer, a Savior, a baby — His Son — just as the Old Testament prophets had prophesied.
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times” (Micah 5:2 NIV).
God proved His incredible mindfulness of mankind with the arrival of Jesus. Through Him, the Lord made a way out of sin and back to Him. God’s great love was put on display with His Son’s life in exchange for our redemption.
As we celebrate Jesus’ arrival on earth this Christmas, are you exhausted by responsibilities and activities, or are you, like David, captivated by God’s majesty and splendor? Let us remember that the God who created the universe didn’t leave us in our broken state but, through great sacrifice, made a way for us to be restored in our relationship to Him. Let us bow down in worship and share that joy with others.
