In Deuteronomy 6:7, Moses commands parents to “impress” God’s Word into the lives of their children. Then, he gives instructions on how to actually make that happen within the rhythms of each day. He says, “Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up” (Deuteronomy 6:7b). The Lord has called moms and dads to be the primary disciple-makers of the home and has given them the awesome privilege and responsibility to intentionally engage their children in daily conversations about Him.

Many parents know they are called to disciple their children, but they don’t feel adequate or equipped to do so. Usually, they will respond with one of three common objections.

I don’t have time.

Actually, time is not the problem; intentionality is the real issue. In the latter part of Deuteronomy 6:7 the Lord is calling parents not to focus on a time of day, but rather He is showing parents how they can talk to their children about Him throughout the day. God simply points out that having faith conversations with children means talking about Him in the natural rhythms of each day.

I don’t know how to answer their questions.

If you do not know the answer to their questions, you have permission to say, “I don’t know the answer to your question, but together we will find out.” Your search allows you a great opportunity to explore God’s Word and talk with your pastor or a trusted friend to discover the right answer to their inquiries. Both you and your children will grow spiritually by searching the Scriptures.

I’ve never been discipled myself.
So where do I start?
Simply start with God’s Word today. Open your Bible and allow the author of Scripture, the Holy Spirit, to be your teacher as He reveals His infallible truth in your life. Then, as you intentionally live out His Word, share what the Lord has shown you to your children.

If parents will apply Deuteronomy 6:7, the next generation will be eager learners of the Bible, authentic doers of His commands, and intentional teachers of Scripture to future generations. The Faith at Home ministry is committed to giving families tools for discipling the next generation. The Acts 2:39 Missional Families seven-week study resource includes a parent and a leader guide designed to help families become missional in their homes and neighborhoods. Church leaders and parents will want to download this practical resource to equip parents to live out the Great Commission in their homes and communities.
